Lunic - TriState Indie Live Review

Launch Music Conference Live Review
-Rich McKie, Tri State Indie (April 29, 2012)

<a href="http://www.tristateindie.com/tri-state-live/launch-music-festival-and-conference-day-2-recap/">

Lunic is Kaitee Page, Megan Berson, and Masha Mayer from New York City. Their act consists of atmospheric electropop music that takes its influences from bands like The XX and Portishead. Their performance was a psychedelic display of lyric poetry in the form of an understated, powerful show. The songs were subtly brilliant, as no parts were overdone, and the overall sound fit the dark and smoky stage on which they played. Page&rsquo;s voice, hypnotizing and melodic lulled the audience into a somber contemplation. The music, electronically inspired and downright trippy was a great way to introduce a genre that&rsquo;s not fully figured out at this point. It wasn&rsquo;t hard enough to be straight rock. It wasn&rsquo;t synthed-out enough to be too poppy, either. It was in between these genres, but the whole time the performance was sultry and captivating. Lunic is great, and I&rsquo;m glad to have seen the show. Keep your eyes peeled for a video interview, as well, as we caught up with the band in the TSI band lounge.

Lunic - CMJ Spotlight

Sonicbids/CMJ Spotlight: Lunic (New York, NY)
Kaitee Page and Megan Berson make late-night music
April 13, 2012 | By Zoe Camp

<a href="http://www.cmj.com/columns/sonicbids-spotlight/lunic-new-york-ny/">

Come nightfall, New York City becomes a dark, ethereal place. After the banality of the 9-to-5, six million souls have to let out their angst somehow: dancing, drinking, wandering. And with this urban lycanthropy comes the necessity for an appropriate set of tunes, glossy enough for the dance floor but retaining that sinister edge. Electronic-rock duo Lunic knows this quite well. As Gotham natives, they can&rsquo;t help but make the city their muse.

Between Lunic&rsquo;s two members&mdash;singer/multi-instrumentalist Kaitee Page and electric violinist Megan Berson&mdash;stretches an immense range of sounds, typical and otherwise. Berson, for example, plays a MIDI violin, an electronic instrument capable of producing whorls and whooshes in addition to your standard fiddle riff. Even though Lunic grounds itself in the type of high-production rock popularized by bands like Garbage and Metric, the technological risk-taking that defines the group&rsquo;s 2009 debut, Lovethief, makes the night anthems all the more epic. This is even more true with regards to Lunic&rsquo;s newer tracks, like &ldquo;Moving On&rdquo; (peep the video below). Over a driving, club-y synth line peppered with hints of that melancholy violin, Page vows to get over a breakup the way New Yorkers do: wearing skinny jeans and old sneakers, getting drunk and letting the nightlife work its magic. Other tracks, like the forlorn &ldquo;Far Away&rdquo; (featuring a chilling violin solo by Berson), tackle the immense loneliness that paradoxically strikes, even in a gigantic metropolis.

In addition to opening for the likes of Moby, Creed and Mindless Self Indulgence, Lunic has maintained a steady stream of headlining gigs in the tri-state area. But Lunic&rsquo;s fans aren&rsquo;t just local: Lovethief was funded completely by the band&rsquo;s fans around the world, a demographic that will only grow with Lunic&rsquo;s next LP, slated for a summer 2012 release.

Lunic: all-female band rocks the Trash Bar

Check out this write-up about us in <a target="_new" href="http://blustil.wordpress.com/2011/07/19/lunic-rocks-the-trash-bar/">Blue Steel Magazine!
by Messiah Bey

Friday is one of those days during the week that can go either way. You may experience some tiredness from the long week past, or you could feel excited about the weekend ahead. July 15th 2011, I was feeling a little bit of both. I was tired from the work week, but I was excited to get out of work and quickly return home to change clothes and step back out again. I got a date with Lunic at the Trash Bar.

If you are unfamiliar with the name Lunic, you may want to spend a little time getting better acquainted with this musical phenomenon. Lunic is an all-girl Indie band consisting of Kaitee Page (songwriter/multi-Instrumentalist) and Megan Berson (violinist).. While New York City has seen its share of all-girl groups, Lunic is a duo of truly talented women who hold their own with the best of them.

Although the group is described as a new wave band, their sound transcends genre and seems more of a blend of several genres with a consistent electronic backdrop that ignites a colorful canvas of melody. Lead vocalist, Kaitee Page, reminds me of PJ Harvey, but with more soul and a lot more stage presence. Their song &ldquo;Love Me&rdquo; is one clear sign of this.

Violinist, Megan Berson, who is building up a reputation as one of the best violinist in the world, even surpassing Jascha Heifetz, adds another dimension to Lunic&rsquo;s sound that gives the band a warm, but distinctively innovative vibe to the group&rsquo;s overall presentation. Megan also adds in a nice complement of backing vocals to Kaitee&rsquo;s soaring falsetto.

I was racing from Harlem to Brooklyn in hopes to make it to the show on time. Fortunately, things started off a little bit late so I was able to kind of wind down and enjoy the atmosphere. After listening to Lunic&rsquo;s music over the internet, I was really impressed that their live performance was just as intense as the record, something very unique in way of electronic sound. The trio scored with every single song that was performed as the audience stood in head-nod amazement, and just for one moment it felt as if I stepped outside of New York City, and was driving along Angeles Crest Highway underneath the stars.

Checkout Lunic&rsquo;s website: http://lunicmusic.com/fr_news.cfm Lunic will be appearing at Best Buy stores located at 14th Street, Union Square, New York, N.Y. on July 28th 2011. This is a live performance, but can also be viewed via streaming video at the following link: http://www.liveatbestbuy.com/

far away

i lived days &amp; nights like you
everybody just passing through
take all i can get in one day
cause tomorrow seems so far away

bide your time and test your luck
a little white pill, another quick f*ck
in the whirlwind of street desire
you ponder your heart's own fire

slick in the moment then predictably numb
cross the street to another someone
you've had your high you've had your fun
crack a smile, what's done is done

it's always a thunderstorm in here
without it the silence would hurt my ears
best the lightning strikes my heart
than for solitude to tear it apart

through the chaos you're alone
a million miles away from home
and all that you've ever known
seems so far away now

So I've been studying German for about two weeks now and it's going so great! I'm going back to Germany in December to spend 3 weeks in Gutersloh and Bielefeld. While I'm there I'm gonna take German language classes, work on some new songs (bringing my acoustic guitar with me :), and maybe I'll play some open mic's if I can. I'm so psyched to see my friend Jens and spend time in smaller towns so I'll be forced to try and speak German. It's going to be such a great time!!

Syracuse was so boring. &nbsp;The best thing about Syracuse was this guy (on the right)&nbsp;&nbsp;
Cambridge, MA on the other hand was amazing!! Harvard Square is beautiful and it was so packed with people and festivities and everyone was having a great time :) I highly recommend Oktoberfest in Harvard Square to anyone in or near the Boston area next October. It was awesome!!

Germany

I've been so busy since I got back from Germany that I've barely had time to write! I ended up going to both Munich and Berlin. It was such an amazing trip!! It was the 200th anniversary of Oktoberfest in Munich and I was able to reconnect with a dear old friend of mine, Jens. We celebrated Oktoberfest with his friends, and then I went up to Berlin with Benny and ran around seeing as many touristy sites as possible. Check out the pictures <a target="_new" href="http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=218485&amp;id=561301897">here. I miss Germany already and I really want to go back ASAP!! Maybe in a few months...

All Tomorrows Parties

We just got back from the ATP Music Festival this weekend in Monticello, NY and it was absolutely amazing!! The theme of this year's festival was 'Don't Look Back' and it was so inspiring to see older musicians like Iggy and the Stooges, The Breeders, Sonic Youth, and Hope Sandoval ROCK a sold-out stage. I was inspired beyond words... at some points, to tears. Watching Iggy perform reminded me why I do what I do and watching The Breeders play reminded me that making rock music is a way of life, not a phase of life. It was awesome :) Watching Iggy was like entering another world. It's not just him as the show, it's the entire audience, the entire stage, the entire crew, every piece of equipment on stage, everything in the room becomes a part of his show. Sheer mayhem. And Sonic Youth was a whole other story. They had us freaking out on the dance floor like we've never freaked out before haha! I literally wrote a song while watching them (can't wait to show it to you)! And Hope Sandoval: the lovely, sad, childlike voice of Mazzy Star with her fragile, angelic melodies, well... she made me cry. Twice. Literally, this whole festival was almost too much to take. All I need now is to play! Immediately.

This past month I've met so many interesting people from all around the world. It's really inspiring to hear their stories and the different things they've been through in all different countries. It really makes me want to learn another language. I was pretty good at Spanish in high school and college... I think I'd like to take on French asap! oui! PS - Two of my favorite French bands that you should check out: Indochine and Daisybox. Love them both! Oh and my favorite French film (so far): The Dreamers
